Just For Fun Friday 09/13/13

It’s Friday the 13th! Were you tempted to stay in bed today? Do you have Paraskavedekatriaphobia – fear of Friday the 13th, or Triskaidekaphobia…the fear of the number 13? Oh my – this isn’t YOUR year, is it?

If not that, do you have a different fear?

Billy Bob Thornton claims to be afraid of antique furniture.  I’m just wondering… under what circumstance would you be in danger from an old chair, bed, or sideboard?  It’s NOT going to chase you around the house with an axe, is it?  Christina Ricci claims a fear of house plants.  Is that philodendron going to wrap itself around her throat in the middle of the night? Ironically, Pamela Anderson has Eisoptrophobia - a fear of mirrors, and Nichole Kidman says she’s afraid of butterflies. Several celebrities, including Orlando Bloom, fear pigs.  Okay – a big pig can be scary, but unless you are the caretaker at a petting zoo, or have a farm, there’s really not much danger, is there? I don’t know about you, but I think their publicists have been working overtime.

Writers, beware! You could have Cyberphobia (fear of computers)fear of computers, in which case you’d have to go back to a typewriter or pencil and paper, unless of course you also had Ergophobia – fear of work, or Papyrophobia- fear of paper.  And if a writer suffered from Chronophobia- fear of time, Deciophobia- fear of making decisions, Phronemophobia- fear of thinking , or Kathisophobia- fear of sitting down , maybe he’d be better off in another line of work. If you had Epistemophobia or Gnosiophobia- fear of knowledge,  Kainophobia- fear of anything new,  or Sophophobia- fear of learning, your efforts in research could be greatly hindered.  Depending on what kind of writing you do, Arithmophobia- fear of numbers,  Metrophobia- fear of poetry, or Mnemophobia- fear of memories, could be tragic.

 Some writers should have

but no writer could cope with Logophobia or Verbophobia -fear of words, Graphophobia- fear of writing, or  Bibliophobia- fear of books. It’s a good thing not many people suffer from that last one, or we wouldn’t have readers!

Who’s afraid of me?

I’m okay with creepy-crawlies and mice and all those other things girls are supposed to be afraid of. But I’m terrified of heights and bridges.   My kids are a little sadistic -  they brought home the movie Cliffhanger  (Sylvester Stallonebridge) for us to watch. That opening scene scared the you-know-what out of me. And they laughed! But in recent years, with all the bridge collapses that have happened in various states, they are beginning to reconsider my fear of bridges. See? Mother Knows Best!

Okay – I’ve confessed. Your turn. What are YOU afraid of?

Birds or chickens–I like to look at them, but I don’t want one landing on me. I don’t know why–except that my mother used to lay a chicken down on the lawn, put a broom handle across it’s neck, and then pull its feet–thus, beheading the chicken she was going to clean and cook for our dinner. The head flopped one way for a time; the body another. At times, I’ve played our chicken “run” at home–and that was fine. But I’m suddenly jolted if I come upon a dead bird or chicken. Once a boy threw a dead bird at me and it landed right in my abdomen. No other explanation of why these fowl are fearful to me. I’ve thanked God for not calling me to raise chickens!
